The Greener The Better

Going Green is more than just a mere commercialized stunt that brands all around the world carry out to get some advertising and attention done.

Everyday, the air that we breathe in, the glare of the sun on our skin, the water that we drink, is so much more polluted, dangerous and contaminated compared to a decade before 2010. Have you ever wondered why is it that humans lived up to 100 years and above decades ago and now, its lucky enough that humans can live up to 70 years old? If we don't start caring for our planet now, our planet will no longer be a place to live in and humans might not go as far as living to see cars flying through clouds of sky-high buildings.

go_green_by_imnickle

Here are some simple “green tips” for every day living. When done regularly, they just become a way of life.

1. Skip the bottled water
-Use a water filter to purify tap water instead of buying bottled water. Not only is bottled water expensive, but it generates large amounts of plastic container waste.
-Bring a reusable water bottle, preferably aluminium rather than plastic, with you when travelling or at work. This also applies to buying coffee.

2. Borrow instead of buying
-Borrow from libraries instead of buying personal books and movies. This saves money, not to mention the ink and paper that goes into printing new books. Download from bit torrent. Go paperless and wireless.

3. Less petrol means more money
-Shake those legs! Walk or bike to work. This saves on petrol, ERP and parking costs while improving your cardiovascular health and reducing your risk of obesity.
-Consider telecommuting if you live far from your work. Or move closer. Even if this means paying more rent, it could save you money in the long term.

4. Make your own cleaning supplies
-The big secret: you can make very effective, non-toxic cleaning products whenever you need them. All you need are a few simple ingredients like baking soda, vinegar, lemon, and soap.
-Making your own cleaning products saves money, time, and packaging-not to mention your indoor air quality. It’s fun!

5. Eat smart
-If you eat meat, add one meatless meal a week. Meat costs a lot at the store-and it’s even more expensive when you consider the related environmental and health costs.
-Buy locally raised, humane, and organic meat, eggs, and dairy whenever you can. Purchasing from local farmers keeps money in the local economy.

6. Think before you buy
-Go online to find new or gently used second-hand products. Discover vintage. Whether you’ve just moved or are looking to redecorate, consider a service like yahoo classifieds or ebay to track down furniture, appliances, and other items cheaply or for free. This is especially true for baby’s toys and accessories.
-Check out garage sales, thrift stores, and consignment shops for clothing and other everyday items.

7. Save energy to save money
-Use fans whenever possible; air conditioning units are huge energy eaters.
-Install compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) when your older incandescent bulbs burn out.
-Unplug appliances when you’re not using them. Or, use a “smart” power strip that senses when appliances are off and cuts “phantom” or “vampire” energy use.
-Wash clothes in cold water whenever possible. As much as 85 percent of the energy used to machine-wash clothes goes to heating the water.
-Use a drying rack or clothesline to save the energy otherwise used during machine drying.

8. Buy smart
-Buy in bulk. Purchasing food from bulk bins can save money and packaging.
-Wear clothes that don’t need to be dry-cleaned. This saves money and cuts down on toxic chemical use.
-Invest in high-quality, long-lasting products. You might pay more now, but you’ll be happy when you don’t have to replace items as frequently.

9. Save water to save money
-Take shorter showers to reduce water use. This will lower your water and heating bills too. Take cold showers whenever possible; avoid baths.
-Install a low-flow showerhead. They don’t cost much, and the water and energy savings can quickly pay back your investment.
-Avoid using a dishwasher; soap plates without using the tap and then rinse sparingly.
-Wash your car as sparingly as possible; commercial carwashes have a tendency to waste large amounts of water though some do use recycled water.

10. Keep electronics out of the trash
-Keep your cell phones, computers, and other electronics as long as possible.
-Donate or recycle them responsibly when the time comes. E-waste contains mercury and other toxics and is a growing environmental problem.
-Recycle your cell phone.
-What items can and can’t be recycled; lobby to have a recycling bin in your area.

Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better

My heart is all broken reading about dogs on Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better. Dogs being physically and mentally abused by their owners and random strangers. Dogs being thrown out to an Island to fend for their lives. Strays which didn't survive because rescue was too late. It is heart wrenching to know that we are more than a million in Malaysia and there's only 5% of us who are dedicating our hearts to be the voice and support for these animals who cant speak for themselves.

As I was reading the articles on MDDB, it is so unbelievable that humans can be so cruel to a certain extend. Being in the working world myself, I have encountered numerous people who tend to take advantage of any given situation, even if it means breaking the law, in order to be richer or a step up from where they used to be. We might not realise it but we are no better than the carnivorous animals in the jungle which feed on their own kind in order to survive. What a world we are born into.

Here, organizations such as MDDB (Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better), PAWS Malaysia and SPCA Malaysia are trying so hard to speak and protect our human companions and on the other hand, there are more of us trying to get rid of these animals because they are like pests to certain people. My heart is all out for the people who are trying to reach the world by making a point that humans have no rights to take animals for granted or to abuse them just because they have no home. They have feelings too and we don't get to feel it because they cant speak our language.

Dogs and other animals deserve to be loved. If you have a blog or some other way you can spread an awareness such as this, please do help to do so. I hope that Malaysians will open their eyes and be ONE, as all the media are bragging about, to help each other create a better world for us to live in.

This weekend Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better will be at Trift & Green Bazaar by A Shopaholic's Den located at 32 Square. Be there to support them!

A Little Goes a Long Way..

In conjunction with National Breast Cancer Awareness on the month of October 2009, Dorfbury is spreading the awareness by creating something of their own, Project Pink Ribbon.

The product will be launched tonight at 9pm sharp and for each purchase of this product related to their Project Pink Ribbon, a certain amount will be donated to the Breast Cancer Welfare Association of Malaysia.

This is a sincere way to create awareness through fashion, through shoppers of the online community, and to support those who suffer from Breast Cancer. Few things are as heart-breaking as not being able to save someone who could have been saved. So make sure you log on at 9pm tonight and check out what Dorfbury and BCWA have in store for you.

Please Help! Missing Siblings last seen at Sri Putramas, Jalan Kuching

Dear Readers,

We are very distraught by the fact that, more children are missing despite the number of awareness campaigns and countless articles generated to the public.

Parents were advised to keep an eye on their children at all times and we still hear news of children going missing every single day. We really hope that parents are more aware of their surroundings and to hold on to their children at all times. Children gone missing is an extreme matter where they have a high chance of not coming home at all.

So, please!! Please take this as a very serious matter and DO NOT allow your children to run around outside the house perimeters alone or unescorted. This can highly reduce the chances of a stranger walking and talking to them. Also, tell your children how they CANNOT talk to strangers and how to call for help if they were being approached. They might not understand, but find a way to explain to them how they will get into trouble if they do talk to a stranger without you being around.

We hope to make our world and the future a safer place for the next generation of our kind, and we hope that you will also have the heart to help spread the news of these missing children.

Nadia Natasha 8 yrs and Ahmad Zakry 10 yrs were missing since 22nd June 2009, last seen at Sri Putramas, Jalan Kuching, KL at 7pm. Please call Puan Miza at 013-345 5661 if you have any information on the missing children.

We hope and pray for their safe return.
We would like to Thank the A:far Weekend Team for emailing us the news and to help spread the word.

Thank you

Go Beyond Green With Eco-friendly Beauty Trends

Green living doesn't have to mean forgoing the latest looks, especially when eco-conscious beauty is the hottest thing going. Formulations driven by nature, practices that are kind to the earth and minimal packaging are all cool ways to celebrate the warm weather.

Here are some of the hottest eco-conscious beauty trends going.

Fresh as a Rose
The classic and perfect rose inspires some of the hottest colors and scents of the season. Cheeks blush in pretty shades of pink for day and bold fuchsia for evening, while glamorous pink lips perfectly accompany spring smiles. For an all-over ethereal glow, the Roseflower Radiance Stick from The Body Shop is a soft, natural and preservative-free way to achieve a dewy spring glow. Match spring's romantic mood and sweep the silky, sheer golden pink highlighter along the cheekbones for a subtle shimmer that enhances the complexion.

Made with rose oil from the "valley of roses" near the Atlas Mountains, The Body Shop Moroccan Rose Body Butter melts on contact with the skin for superb hydration and releases the delectable fragrance of roses harvested at dawn, at their fragrance peak. It also features rich Community Trade ingredients from Ghana and Brazil.

Pastels and Pinks
This season, eyes shimmer in paparazzi-friendly pastel greens, pinks and golds. Celebrity makeup artist Chase Aston says a soft gold eye shimmer is fresh and modern and is perfect for an all-over eye, from lash to brow. For a contemporary effect, a cool mint green swept along the top lash line and underneath the lower lashes sings spring.

"To take this runway look to night and capture a perfectly imperfect smoky eye, take a black eye definer pencil and line along top lash line, then dip an eye color brush into midnight blue eye color and smudge over eye definer line," says Aston.

Waste Not
What is on the outside of a beauty product is just as important as what's within. Look for sustainably-harvested and fairly-traded ingredients, as well as minimal packaging made from post-consumer materials. And when you're done with a container, remember to recycle it!

Wild Accessories
Reduce, reuse and recycle are today's hottest buzzwords. Raid your closet for vintage jewelry and accessories or hit your local thrift shop for a bold bargain that pops. When the sun is shining, remember to protect yourself from UV rays with a stylish round pair of sunglasses.

Beauty that Gives Back
Being good to the Earth also includes being kind to the people who inhabit the planet. Everyday products and practices can make a big difference, so look for beauty that gives back.

Purchasing a product like the preservative-free Tantalizing Lip Butter from The Body Shop and MTV means a donation is made to the Staying Alive Foundation, a charity saving lives by empowering young people around the world to protect themselves and their communities against HIV and AIDS. Now that's beautiful.

And when you’re done all your beauty shopping, you need an eco-friendly and stylish bag to carry all your goodies home in. Try The Body Shop Bag for Life, which is a reusable, organically grown cotton bag produced without harmful pesticides.

Help Save Turtles with Just One Signature by WWF

The leatherback turtle is the largest of all living sea turtles and the fourth largest modern reptile behind three crocodilians.

The beach of Rantau Abang in Terengganu , Malaysia, had once had the largest nesting population in the world with 10,000 nests per year. However in 2008 only 2 leatherback turtles nested at Rantau Abang and unfortunately the eggs where infertile. The major cause for the decline in the leatherback turtles is the practice of egg collection in Malaysia. While specific nesting beaches have been identified in the region, leatherback populations in the Indian Ocean remain generally unassessed and unevaluated.

Recent estimates of global nesting populations indicate 26,000 to 43,000 nesting females annually, which is a dramatic decline from the 115,000 estimated in 1980. These declining numbers have contributed to conservation efforts to stabilize the leatherback sea turtles and move their species away from the current status of critically endangered.

In support of keeping the sea turtles away from harm, 21st April 2009, WWF Malaysia launched "Egg=Life" campaign which will pledge to

1. support laws that will ban the sale and consumption of all turtle eggs throughout Malaysia
2. support the call for comprehensive and holistic Federal legislation to conserve marine turtles
3. never consume turtle eggs, or trade in turtles or their parts

Anyone can sign up to support the campaign and help our marine turtles at wwf.org.my.

Each signature in support of WWF-Malaysia’s “Egg=Life” campaign will lend weight to efforts aimed at improving turtle protection legislation in Malaysia, and I hope that everyone will log on to wwf.org.my and help save turtles with just one signature.

Dogs Swimming To Kelong - Some Don't Make It

Some of the dogs are swimming to the kelong but they have been turned away by workers on these kelongs. Some don't have the energy to fight the currents & drown. We have offered the Indonesian workers on these kelongs some money to haul up dogs that try to get there so that we can put them in cages for us to go collect. We have also asked them to try to get the dogs for us & build a floating pontoon to put food on the island. The tide will rise & fall but food on the pontoon will not be washed away and hopefully, the dogs get at it. A temporary solution before we can get to them.

Time is against us & every second we waste, is a second closer to their doomsday. If you know of someone who can spare us the use of their boat for transporting of the cages to land, we would really appreciate it. Please get them to call Sabrina at +60166319018.

Rescuing Dogs Left On Island To Die

About 300 stray dogs were rounded up by Pulau Ketam residents and deported to an isolated island to fend for themselves.

Over half of them are already dead and the remaining ones may not live long. A rescue mission is being mounted and your help is needed.

The residents of Pulau Ketam sent some 300 stray dogs to exile on a remote island where the harsh conditions almost certainly guarantee a horrible death. Of the 300 dogs sent there, more than three-quarters are presumed to be already dead. I traveled to the island with Sabrina Yeap of Furry Friends Farm and managed to save only one dog on this reconnaissance trip. We did see several other starving and dying dogs along the mangrove shore.

I am mounting an urgent rescue mission to capture and transport the remaining survivors back to Sabrina's Furry Friends Farm animal shelter. But time is running out and there might be only skeletons and carcasses left to collect on our next trip. Boat hire is expensive there. It is a tourist area and it has already cost me a few hundred ringgit for boat hire alone, so far. The rescued dogs cannot be transported on the regular ferries.

Almost nobody will lift a finger to help without a fee. This is understandable. The locals are already shaking their heads in disbelief that there are outsiders who want to save the animals they so casually discarded. Instead of pointing fingers and antagonising them, we need their co-operation to help save the unfortunate creatures. In the process, we also hope to educate the islanders on better treatment of animals. It would be an impossible mission if we didn't win their hearts.

If you are unable to help directly, please help by forwarding this appeal to other compassionate folks who you feel might be able to make some monetary contributions.

Apart from boat hire, we need money to buy cages, to pay people to help catch them, to hire land transport to send the rescued animals to veterinary clinics, pay for vet fees, send the recovered ones to the shelter and to feed and house them for life. I can go on!

To donate or help, e-mail TV Smith at tvsmith@mycen.com.my or Sabrina Yeap at yeapwen@yahoo.com

Account Number - 1457-0001182-056 (CIMB Bank)

Fellow bloggers, you can also help by embedding the appeal poster above to your blog and linking to http://www.mycen.com.my/rescue

We are aware it is a monumental task and appreciate all forms of support, assistance, suggestions, encouragement and your prayers.

Thank you and don't forget to view the pictures of the dogs in order to appreciate their plight.
