Life in Monochrome : Pink

Our much anticipated Life In Monochrome segment for the month of July is finally here! We would once again, like to thank everyone for the effort and contributions that have made Life in Monochrome a success over the past 2 months.

This month has been a a busy one for us as so it's a huge relief to finally be able to settle down and start putting August's Life in Monochrome segment together. And for the first time, we want you girls (and guys if any) to vote for your favourite entry in this month's segment! Just to make things a wee bit more interesting!

As you've probably already realized, Pink is the sweet colour of the month.
And speaking of pink, we're also taking this opportunity to further promote the awareness of Dorfbury's Pink Ribbon Project. In case you don't already know, Dorfbury will be donating a certain amount to the Breast Cancer Welfare Association of Malaysia from each purchase of their Project Pink Ribbon product range.

*you may tag the cover of our June 09's issue on your blog!

So sit back, grab a "sirap-bandung" drink and treat yourself to what we have in store for you...

Kimono-styled dresses are more often than not, plain and simple with usually more conservative motifs. What we have here to start our segment is a rather unique, not-so-plain, feline-inspired piece from A Model Studio at a purrringly good RM44!

Next up, Alice Wonders presents the famous Quilted Patent bag ala Chanel which was such a hit (and still is) among the Online Shopping Community. We've seen this bag in the flesh and can testify that it's as sophisticated and appealing as it looks in pictures! So in case you've been looking for one or you've just fallen in love with it, head on to Alice Wonders and grab it for RM99!

What's not to like about the Pinkie Giraffe? This latest handmade pillow from Beanipet made us feel all warm and fuzzy, and charmed its way into this month's Life In Monochrome. The RM100 pricetag may be slightly steep, but the skill, craft, attention to detail and irresistable cute-ness definitely justifies it.

As mentioned earlier, Dorfbury are doing their part for society via Project Pink Ribbon. We also explained that they will be donating a certain amount to the Breast Cancer Welfare Association of Malaysia with every purchase of a specific product. This neat and useful "Chollie" bra hanger set is that product and it costs a guilt-free RM10. So get a set today, enjoy some convenience of the bra-hanging kind and do your part for society!

Dress.it.Hawt want you to get hot with their very versatile Smoking Hot Pink Dress!
This dress is perfect for every occasion; be it a cool chill-out session with friends, a warm family dinner, or that hot weekend date you were going on! Get this and you can control your own temperature (In a fashion sense) for only RM40!

What happens when you blend marshmallows, candy floss, strawberry yogurt and a piece of cloth together? You get the Sweet Sailorette! Wear it for comfort, wear it plain, wear it as a top, wear it as a mini dress or pimp it up with accessories! Not a bad deal for only RM38. Brought to you by Impulse Grabber.

Every girl needs an everyday bag and here's one that fits the bill perfectly. The Wannabe Drawstring Tote from Just Bag It costs a really sweet RM55 and well, it's everything an everyday bag needs to be; easy, convenient, spacious and non-complicated!

No Plain Days make it to this month's list with the Sheer Romance Dress. Priced at RM43, it's to be worn as an outer layer that's perfect for mixing and matching. Wear it over a tank top, pair it with skinnies, or if you're feeling adventurous; it'd probably work as a romantic piece of lingerie too!

If you love giraffes the way we love Owls, then this month's Life In Monochrome should be pretty interesting for you. We brought you the giraffe pillow earlier, and now we're bringing you a giraffe pendant from Oozora Tang at RM42 to satisfy the giraffe lover in you!

If you're a fan of tube dresses, PrettyEverAfter have something for you which so happens to look like one of our own favourite tube dresses! Take a walk on the beach or just express your fun nature to the world with Summer Bay ll at only RM48.

What better way is there for us to welcome The Fashion Word to the online shopping community than by including them in this month's segment? Here they are making a sweet statement with the very sweet Dolly Pink! We really love the laced details along the edge of this layered tube and we also love the RM35 price tag!

Our final entry is a work of art... Really, it actually is a work of art. And it's from the very talented artist behind "mer?" (No, we're not posing a question. It's a name) "mer?" needs your help in choosing between 2 colours for their latest bag design. Help her out!

*We like the pink of course!

Unfortunately, that wraps up our Life in a very sweet Monochrome for the month. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!

Want to be part of next month's "Life in Monochrome" issue? Email us to be included in our mailing list!!

Little Marketto

For some reason, to us, the name Little Marketto paints an image of a little Korean or Japanese place selling cute little things. Their cute name isn't just for the sake of being cute though, because all the stuff they have on their site is in some way or another, rather cute!

Our personal pick would be this Strawberry Bracelet.
We love how its modest yet exquisite look is highlighted so well by the red strawberry.
A simple piece like this, often works as a better item to accessorize with when compared to something of a more complicated nature. Not to mention, it's easier to match as well!

Strawberry love bracelet RM18

Simple and plain doesn't mean boring. So if you're like us and simplicity is your thing, this would probably tickle your fancy pretty well!

A Little Goes a Long Way..

In conjunction with National Breast Cancer Awareness on the month of October 2009, Dorfbury is spreading the awareness by creating something of their own, Project Pink Ribbon.

The product will be launched tonight at 9pm sharp and for each purchase of this product related to their Project Pink Ribbon, a certain amount will be donated to the Breast Cancer Welfare Association of Malaysia.

This is a sincere way to create awareness through fashion, through shoppers of the online community, and to support those who suffer from Breast Cancer. Few things are as heart-breaking as not being able to save someone who could have been saved. So make sure you log on at 9pm tonight and check out what Dorfbury and BCWA have in store for you.

The Truth Behind Some Beauty Myths

When we were struggling through those awkward teenage years, when our hormones were wreaking havoc on our bodies and our skin, we were most likely inundated by advice from our mothers and grandmothers, and even our girlfriends, on what we should do to keep ourselves beautiful despite the storm of changes upon us and upon our bodies. Some of them sound sensible, while some sound totally absurd.

But even if these pieces of advice sound really silly, there are some of them that we could not easily shake off. They seem to work for us, and why let go of a good thing if it is working somewhat?

Nonetheless, for curiosity's sake, sometimes there is a need to ask. Do the beauty practices handed down to us by our mothers, grandmothers and girlfriends that we have religiously observed through the years hold a grain of scientific truth in them, or are they merely beauty myths spun by old wives? Let's find out.

Beauty Myth #1: Plucking white hairs yields more white hairs.

This is definitely just a beauty myth. Our hair whitens as part of the natural process of aging, and some of us see our hair start turning white earlier than usual compared to others. It only seems to us that we are having more and more gray hair after we see our first strand of white because our mind is now trained to look for the grays in our mane, and so we are now more likely to notice.

Beauty Myth #2: Shaving the hair makes it grow back thicker.

This is definitely another beauty myth as well. Shaved hair seems to grow back thicker only because when we shave, the razor cuts the hair off only on the skins surface. They were not plucked off directly from the follicle. Therefore, when the hair grows back, the wide part of the strand grows out, making the hair appear thicker.

Beauty Myth #3: Mayonnaise makes for a great conditioner.

No, this one is not a myth. Mayonnaise, as long as it is real, does make for a great hair conditioner. The oil and eggs that can be found in real mayonnaise is rich in fatty acids and protein that nourishes the hair.

Beauty Myth #4: Applying ice to the skin makes the pores smaller.

Nothing can make the pores smaller. The size of our pores is the result of genetics, not of temperature applied on the skin, so some people just have smaller pores than others.

Beauty Myth #5: Toothpaste can cure pimples

Well, yes. Toothpaste has menthol and other active ingredients that can dry up a pimple and make it heal much quickly than if left alone. However, the same active ingredients in toothpaste that can heal a pimple can also dry up and irritate the skin of your face, so it is better to use a pimple cream rather than toothpaste for your pimple.

Beauty Myth #6: Applying beer on the skin before going for a sun tan results in a golden glow.

No, not true. In fact, you should avoid sun tanning altogether, unless you are going to use a self-tanner. Applying beer before going for a tan does not do anything for the skin. Some people are just prone to getting a golden tan, while others naturally turn red as a lobster under the sun. It is, again, a matter of genetics.

Beauty Myth #7: Crossing the legs leads to varicose veins.

Not really. The true causes of varicose veins are yet unknown, but again, some people are more prone to having them because of factors like heredity, age and weight. Crossing the legs will not cause you to have varicose veins, but if you already have them, it can make the condition worse.

Beauty Myth #8: Washing the feet when tired will make the veins swell.

The veins in the feet really swell when the feet are tired. It is the body's own automatic attempt to soothe the tiredness of the feet. In fact, it is indeed best to soak the feet in warm water to further increase the blood

Have Yourself a Short Break

It's just the beginning of a Monday morning and we're already looking forward to the coming weekend. And speaking of the weekends, we took a drive up to Genting Highlands over the one that just passed for no particular reason apart from to just get away from the usual weekend routine.

A drive to Genting Highlands only takes about 45 minutes, which is about the same time it takes to endure traffic on the way to a shopping mall in KL. We were welcomed by a cool mist-filled atmosphere and absolutely refreshing air at about 4pm. But do note that depending on your luck, it can be quite warm during the noon, so if youre not planning to go to the theme park (which you'll need a whole day for) and just want to enjoy the cool-ness of it all (Which is what we love doing), it's best to head there in the evening.

We didn't get any thrills from the rides at the theme park, didn't spend any money on tokens at the arcade, and neither did we try our luck at the Casino. Our outing was a casual one, and all we did was just have lunch at The Bakery, stroll around the very cool First World Plaza, watch people scream on the Flying Coaster, catch a sneak preview of Gentings infamous DREAMZ show, and basically just...chill out.

We just have to highlight The Bakery, which apart from being a bakery, also serves up some pretty good sandwiches. Our lunch was a Croissant filled with Smoked Duck topped, Mozzarella Cheese, accompanied by English Mustard and a Parmesan Loaf filled with Smoked Beef, Mozzarella Cheese topped with Mayonnaise which cost us RM16.50 each. Not the cheapest sandwich but you can't really expect cheap things from Gentings. Besides, the cool al fresco seating makes it all worthwhile.

First World Plaza gives you a refreshingly different shopping experience altogether. The place just looks and shouts "entertainment!!!" from every angle. It just feels so magical when it's all lit up and makes you feel as if you're in some sort of Fantasy Wonderworld.

The DREAMZ stage preview was performed on the stage in First World Plaza itself and showcased 3 of their acts filled with dancers, acrobats, men in tights, and a magician. The dance act wasn't something extraordinary, the magician was alright, but the Chinese acrobats were awesome. That preview was a pretty smart way of getting people to turn their attention to buying tickets for the show.

Speaking of buying. we couldn't help but notice how a 360 degree experience in Gentings revolves around an interesting financial cycle, especially when it comes to Casino goers (Which make up a large portion of Gentings guest list anyway). You basically go up with money, head to the Casino and if you're lucky, you'll win more money, but Gentings and all its offerings is filled with so much to do and so much to spend on (Including a very inviting jewellery store for the rich china-man) that you'll most probably end up spending the money that you won anyway, which then goes back to Gentings! No doubt, a possible secret to their success.

At about 8pm, we decided to wrap our trip up with a cup of Joe at Starbucks in the Highlands Hotel, which seems to be becoming a tradition for us before heading home. After all the walking, it's a nice place to just sit, chill a little bit more, enjoy the cool air a while longer, and recuperate before starting the drive down... which we did shortly after.

So if you ever need to get away over the weekend, break the norm of heading to the usual shopping malls, and spend some entertaining time with a loved one; take a trip to the City of Entertainment, as Genting Highlands so proudly label themselves. And if you ask us, that label suits the venue perfectly.

Futuristic Chic

Instead of the usual babydoll dress or two toned high waisted 1 pc, we spotted a futuristic piece off White Label Closet's shelf. Undeniably gorgeous and very fashionable. Sharp sleeves are a bonus to an outfit as it makes the arms slimmer and longer. To match this top with skinny jeans is the perfect combo. Thumbs and toes up from us!

The importance of the other "M" word

You're getting married. The big day is coming up and there's so much to organize. The reception, the wedding party, the guest list, the flowers, the food… the list is endless. You've discussed the wedding finances. You have a plan. You have a wedding budget, and you've nailed down how much you can spend and who's paying for what.

But more importantly, do you have a financial plan for after the wedding? Have you discussed the other "M" word: money? Do you have a financial plan and an everyday budget? Do you know how much you can spend and who is paying for what in your new life together. An important element of a successful marriage is the ability to handle money together. Money is an important resource, which, when handled well, can give you the choice of living the way you want to, both now, and in the future.

For richer and poorer

It's part of most marriage vows, but do you really think about the implications? Having enough to spend on the things you want to accomplish together is important. When a husband and wife are not on the same page as far as family finances go, other difficulties inevitably arise.

Money talks

Talking about money can be difficult for some, especially when you're in love. It may not be romantic, but it's an absolute must for the health of your marriage. Unresolved money issues are a leading cause of divorce. So, don't wait until you've said "I do." Start talking today. Find out what money means to each of you. Are you the saving kind or the spending kind? Discuss your future goals, like buying a home, career changes, starting a family.

Marriage is a blending of lifestyles and, as unromantic as it sounds, bank accounts and debts. That's where the "for richer or for poorer" part comes in. You may think you know everything about your fiancé, when you really only know what he or she has told you and the answers to any questions you've thought to ask. That can leave a lot unsaid, especially when it comes to money.

So to get you started, here are 10 topics to consider:

1.What are your short-term and long-term goals? Sharing your dreams and setting your priorities (a home, children, maybe traveling the world) will decide your lifestyle now and in the future.
2.How much are you going to put away each month to reach your goals?
3.How much does your fiancé make, and what percentage is contributed to an RRSP?
4.How much debt and savings (including investments and real estate) are you each bringing into your marriage? If there are debts, how will they be repaid?
5.How many credit cards do you have between you? If it's many, think about consolidating.
6.What employee benefit packages do you have? What are the options? How much are your contributions? Is it worth upgrading to a single "family" plan, if available? What do you pay for health and disability insurance?
7.Do you want to pool all your resources? Establish a joint chequing account? Divide investing responsibilities? There's no right or wrong answer; it's what works for you.
8.Who will balance the cheque book, track expenses, pay the bills and monitor your investments? Who is the best money manager? Did you grow up in a family who watched every dime or where money flowed freely?
9.What dollar amount will require a joint decision on a purchase?
10.How much do you need to put away for the unforeseen? A good rule of thumb is to have enough in an emergency account to cover three to six months worth of expenses should one of you lose your job or be temporarily unable to work through sickness or an accident.

Don't stop at the talking stage

You will need to come to an agreement on the basics. Most couples discover that down the road, a lack of money, out-of-control spending, or a lack of emergency savings will eventually cause major marriage problems. Without a plan for saving and spending, you tend to live and spend day to day. An agreed-upon budget will help you avoid misunderstandings about how you spend your money. Develop a written financial plan, complete with goals, individual duties and financial policies. And the plan is just the first step. Even if only one partner manages the bills, it is important for both partners to stay fully abreast of the family's financial status. Check your progress every month, and adjust your plan accordingly. Unexpected expenses are certain to occur—that unplanned little bundle of joy, for example!

If you need help, talk to a banking specialist or financial advisor, who can walk you through financial services to understand your goals and set up a financial plan tailored to your new lifestyle.

Best Foot Forward by Anna Lynn C. Sibal

So you are going to have a job interview tomorrow. You really want that new job the salary is great, the benefits package is awesome and it is truly a good career move for you. You think that, with your skills, you have a good shot at landing it.

You know that first impressions last. You have planned your outfit tomorrow, thought about what colors to wear for your make-up, and you have already done up your nails. You even bought a new pair of pantyhose just to make sure that the one you will wear will not have any snags. All you need to do is to get into that outfit and to drive yourself to your interview early enough to arrive at the venue of the job interview five minutes before your appointment.

But are you not forgetting something? What about your shoes? What?! It does not matter because no one will be looking at them? That is where you are wrong, girl. Of course, people will be looking at your shoes. If they do not fit the overall impression you are trying to aim for when you meet your interviewer, then you might end up a goner.

The shoes you wear should complete the look you want to have when you are doing that job interview. The perfect shoes for the corporate look should be dress shoes with closed toes and heels that are three inches or lower. If you can manage flats, then you should go for them. Most of all, your shoes should be clean and should complement your outfit. Wearing scruffy and dirty shoes to a job interview will not help you land the job. In fact, you are more likely to lose this career opportunity by wearing scruffy and dirty shoes; such shoes communicate to the interviewer that you are a sloppy and careless person.

But this does not mean that you cannot show your personal style through your shoes. You can still do so, but you have to bear in mind that the look you choose should be appropriate for the job you are applying for. If you are applying for a position in the banking or finance sector, you should try to be a little more conservative. If you are applying for a job that allows you to be more creative, like in advertising, then wear something that speaks creative, like large buckles or animal prints.

Aside from dirty and scruffy shoes, never ever wear these kinds of shoes to a job interview:

Sneakers. Sure, sneakers are very comfortable and laidback, but they are not formal enough. Job interviews are formal affairs.
Flip-flops, sandals and open-toed shoes. Again, job interviews are formal affairs, and should thus be treated formally. Flip-flops, sandals and open-toed shoes, even if they look classy enough, still look informal and therefore should not be worn on job interviews.

Extremely high heels. High heels look nice. They make you look taller and slimmer. But they are not that practical. You would not want to meet an accident and sprain your ankle while you are rushing to get to your job interview on time. Also, you would want your feet to be comfortable while you are talking to your interviewer. Pain caused by extremely high heels will show on your face.

Embellished shoes. Shoes with too many adornments like crystals or metallic chunks are good for evening wear, not for an office scene. And definitely not for job interviews.

Put your best foot forward at your job interview. And good luck!

WAREHAUS SALE by Threadzoo This Weekend!

What's happening this weekend that you may have missed out on knowing?
Well, We know everyone loves a good sale, no matter the traveling distance. A sale is still a sale and that means cheap stuff!! So this weekend, be sure to drive your way to "The Mist" at Jalan Liku Bangsar because Threadzoo will be having their WAREHAUS SALE this Saturday from 11am to 6pm (no later than that).

Just so you know...We just got news that results were negative of H1N1 flu for The Threadzoo vendors who participated at Urbanscapes the other weekend. What a relief. We honestly thought that those people who purposely went to Urbanscapes even when they knew they had the flu were really inconsiderate, bearing in mind that the flu can be fatal.

So, carrying on. This time at WAREHAUS SALE, the organizers will be giving away free masks as a means of prevention from the H1N1 pandemic. So don't let the H1N1 scare deter you from satisfying your shopping needs. Other than that, they will also be giving out freebies of course!
In support of the SAY NO TO PLASTIC BAGS, shoppers are advised to bring their own shopping bags because if you rather not use your own, shoppers will be charged RM0.50 each! A testament to how serious they are about saving the environment! So please, do your part to make the world a better place.

Lastly, they are giving away RM50 shopping vouchers from Forever 21 (wohoOo) to patrons who shop for more than RM150 with proof of purchase. Now that's not something to be missed!

Top 5 Must-Have Summer Beauty Essentials

Summer means making memories with friends and loved ones. There are more cameras at summer events than there are at a movie premiere, and you'll want to look your best while you beat the heat.

Fortunately, a handful of products that should have a spot in your beauty bag can protect your skin while giving it a sun-kissed glow. Here are the top five affordable luxuries you should have in your makeup kit this summer to keep skin looking healthy, glowing and gorgeous.

Bronzed beauty

Just a few years ago, women spent hours soaking up the sun without the protection of sunscreen. Today, we know the dangers of the sun's UVA and UVB rays and their potential to seriously damage skin. Instead, try Bronzing Powder from The Body Shop in a shade to match your skin tone. Each shade contains the antioxidant vitamin E to protect your skin and Community Trade marula oil, a highly effective moisturizer. Apply bronzing powder over foundation or add shimmer by wearing alone on the face and cheeks.

Mascara that stands up to summer

The heat of summer can lead to less-than-beautiful raccoon eyes, so it's important to have a good waterproof mascara in your toolkit that can stand up to the ocean, the pool and even an afternoon running through the sprinkler.

Bright eyes for hot nights

One of the most affordable ways to update your summer look is with eye color and this season's hottest shades are intense. Celebrity makeup artist Chase Aston recommends Hot Brights Eye Color (available at The Body Shop). His favorite color combinations? Violet Sunset, a flirty pairing of dusky pink with rich mauve and Pearly Sky, a vibrant deep aqua combined with earthy cream.

"Violet Sunset is the perfect color palette for summer smoky eyes. For both the day and night, smudge this intoxicating color palette around the eyes," says Aston. "These satin soft shades in Pearly Sky glide onto the eyes, creating a burst of color that shimmers in the sun for fresh, flirty hues for those hot summer days."

Cool and refreshing

Whether you spent your day at a barbecue or the beach, it's likely you'll need a quick cool down at dusk. The Body Shop's Peppermint Cooling foot spray refreshes and revives hot and tired feet and legs in seconds with Community Trade peppermint from England.

Vacation beauty

If a vacation or quick weekend getaway is in the cards, make sure your travel kit is packed with travel-sized essentials like mini body butters, scrubs and skincare travel kits from The Body Shop. They save room in your suitcase and provide a beautiful summer glow no matter where you jet off to.

With your summer beauty bag packed, make sure you've got other essentials covered. Rock the retro look with a pair of candy-colored, 80s inspired sunglasses. A stylish and oversized black straw hat looks at home on the runway or shading out the sun and a brightly colored sarong that can go from beach cover-up to casual dinner wear will having you feeling like a gilded goddess.

An Outdoor Party ~ For Less

The backyard will be the summer entertainment hot spot as Malaysians seek affordable ways to spend time with family and friends. But your outdoor party can be spoiled quickly if unwelcome insects show up.

More than half of backyard revelers have moved a party indoors due to mosquitoes, and 46 percent have left a party to escape the pests, according to a new survey from the makers of OFF! PowerPad Lamp and Lantern.

Create an unforgettable party within a tight budget with these five tips from Natalie Ermann Russell, author of The Outdoor Entertaining Idea Book

Keep decor simple

Save money on decorations by making the most of the greenery and foliage that surround you. Simple potted plants as center pieces create an elegant setting at little cost, and they'll last much longer than cut flowers.

Set a realistic menu

Give yourself a break by creating a menu that is realistic for your budget and your schedule. To get the best prices, focus on foods that are in season and check out your local farmers' market for deals. Using produce from the farmers' market also makes for less work&Create memorable outdoor parties for less—the flavors of these foods are so intense and beautiful, they're at their best when prepared simply. For example, a pasta primavera with blanched farmers' market veggies can be assembled quickly, and is super colorful and so delicious.

Invite guests to pitch in

The beloved potluck is making a comeback. Your friends and family will enjoy contributing to the event, but be sure to be specific about what you need so that you end up with a good variety of foods. And establishing a theme can make it even more fun. For instance, call it the "Fresh from the Farmers' Market Potluck", where each person brings a dish to highlight a different fruit or vegetable that's in season.

Keep away mosquitoes for less

OFF! PowerPad Lamp can repel mosquitoes from an area of up to 15 by 15 feet—the size of an entire patio—for less than $10. It would take 15 citronella candles at a cost of up to $60 to protect this same area.

Plan right

The fear of running out of food often drives hosts to prepare twice as much food as they need—at twice the cost. Know your head count beforehand and shop accordingly. A general rule of thumb is to plan for six to eight ounces per person of the main protein (e.g., steak, fish, chicken) and one to two ounces of a side dish like rice or pasta.

Use these simple and affordable tips to entice your guests to linger at your next outdoor party.
